I have been trialling this programme for 2 years now, to great effect with personal training clients, mentorship clients and more recently in an online fat loss project in aid of Cancer Research UK. One thing that bugs me, every time I pick up a ‘fitness magazine’ is that I see a guy or woman in great shape, performing a sit up!! You may say, ‘what’s wrong with that?’ The problem with it is this:

It starts a vicious cycle of the ‘ i want to get abs’ ok I will do sit ups…’I want to get rid of my bingo wings’ ….ok I will do triceps dips ‘ i want to tone my inner thighs’ ok i will sit on that ridiculous machine and pull my legs together!!

Bottom line is, if you want to burn body fat and see the muscle beneath it, you have to burn calories. You will struggle until the day you give up the gym membership, to ever do this by adopting a ‘spot reducing’ philosophy that unfortunately the ‘fitness’ media presents you with.

PUT IT THIS WAY, IF SIT UPS GAVE YOU ABS, 95% OF THE UK POPULATION WOULD HAVE ABS!

THEY DONT!

SO YOU KNOW WHAT NOT TO DO, HERE’S WHAT YOU DO NEED TO DO!

You need to move the large muscles in the body i.e. legs, back , chest , shoulders in order to generate the calorific demand needed to create your own fat burning furnace. Now you are probably thinking well, I can use all these muscles running. BUT, you won’t burn the same amount of calories by running for 20 minutes as you will by using timed intervals of resistance training. I won’t bore you with too much science but here are a few reasons why:

- There is an Increased demand to replenish and restore muscle after resistance training (can be your own body weight in some cases) compared with traditional long steady state aerobic exercise.

- The metabolic demand for calories to replenish resistance trained muscles is what creates a fat burning furnace that lasts far longer than your hour’s boring walking on the treadmill. (This was probably the reason you quit your last exercise goal!)

- Many people’s fat deposits are largely due to a lack of testosterone, guess what, using a little resistance can help to increase testosterone levels thus aiding the fat burning process.
